Do you save gas by driving faster?

I’ve looked at fuel economy for some cars that I’m interested in buying. Aside from some hybrid models, every car has better fuel economy on the highway. This doesn’t make a ton of sense to me. Do you actually save gas by driving faster?

While you definitely get better gas mileage on the highway compared to the city, you do not save gas by simply driving faster. Several factors are at play that explain why highway driving is more fuel-efficient than city driving.
Every vehicle has an optimal efficient speed. In gas-powered cars, this is usually between 50 and 60 mph. By sticking within this speed range, you can maximize your mileage. Any faster than this, and aerodynamic drag and excessive acceleration actually hurt your fuel economy.
Conversely, you might think that driving slowly might save gas, but this isn’t true either. Driving slowly, or below the 50 to 60 mph range, requires your car to maintain higher RPMs at lower gears. This causes the engine to burn more fuel than it would if you were going at low RPMs in a higher gear.
Whether you decide to
buy a hybrid
or a gas-powered vehicle, you’re going to need a quality insurance policy to protect your investment. Moreover, lenders will require full coverage if you finance a vehicle**. Because car insurance is expensive for new drivers, use the
