Do you need proof of insurance for a driving test?

I scheduled my driving test for next week, but I want to make sure I’m prepared with all my documentation. Do I need proof of insurance to take a driving test?

When you arrive at the DMV, you need
proof of insurance
to take the driving test.
A digital or paper copy of your car insurance should suffice, regardless of whether you have your own policy or you’re on someone else’s policy.
The other documentation you need to take a driving test on top of proof of insurance may include:
  • Certificate of completion of behind-the-wheel lessons
  • Proof of school enrollment (in some states)
  • Driving log that shows proof of non-instructor
    time behind the wheel
  • Certificate of completion of driver’s ed or equivalent
  • Certificate of completion of the written exam
  • Proof of identity (birth certificate, Social Security card, and/or passport)
  • Proof of residency (your parent’s utility bills should do the trick)
  • Driver’s license application signed by your parents (bringing one of your parents is always a good idea)
You must
provide your own car
for the driving test and you can expect the
fee
to range between $20 and $100. Although you can remain on your parents’ insurance if you don’t regularly drive their car, you’re going to need your own car insurance eventually, especially if you get your own car.
Good luck!
