Do you need car insurance to get a title loan?
I want to do my Christmas shopping early this year to avoid the stress of buying gifts at the last minute, but I don’t have quite enough saved up yet. I have a truck I only use for property maintenance that I want to use to take out a title loan. However, the truck doesn’t have insurance. Do I need insurance to get a title loan?

Shopping early for Christmas gifts is a great idea and will certainly relieve some of the holiday stress! You can get a title loan without car insurance, but you need to find a lender who doesn’t require it.
Requirements vary by provider, and more often than not, the lender will require proof of insurance. However, no legal requirement exists stating that you must have insurance.
If you don’t need proof of insurance, you still need these documents at closing:
- Completed loan application
- Vehicle title and registration
- Driver’s license
Just as you would hunt for deals when Christmas shopping, comparing rates between multiple loan providers can help you save money. Keep in mind that car title loans can be expensive to pay back due to high interest rates, and you risk losing your vehicle if you default on the loan.
To avoid repossession, costly monthly fees, and a high annual percentage rate (APR), consider some other options:
- Borrowing money from friends and family
- Using a credit card with a low interest rate or a low introductory APR
- Waiting until you have the funds to make large purchases
