Do you need an international driving license for the USA?
I’m planning a trip to the U.S. in the next couple of months. I’m from Ireland and I have a full driving license here. I’d like to make some significant road trips in America, so I just want to know if my Irish license will work. Do I need an international driver’s permit (IDP) for the USA?

Road trips are what make America such an interesting place to visit! So if you have an Irish driver’s license, you do not need an international driving license for the USA in 38 states.
The U.S. federal government doesn’t require an IDP. However, 12 states mandate an IDP. If you’re traveling to one of these states, make sure to get your IDP before you leave home:
To legally rent a car in one of the states listed above, you will have to do the following:
- Upload your IDP when you rent the vehicle online.
- Show your IDP when you arrive to pick up the car.
- Some rental companies may require you to do both, so be prepared.
Because your Irish license and IDP are such important documents, make photocopies and bring them with you as a backup.
