Do you need a smog check in Indiana?

I’m moving to Indiana to be just a bit closer to my family but I haven’t lived there in over a decade, so I’m not really sure what I need to add to my moving checklist—especially in terms of my car. I know I need to register my car and get insurance, but I wasn’t sure if I needed an emissions test. Does Indiana require a smog test?

Most residents of Indiana do not need to get a smog check. However, there are a few contingencies involved—since you’re registering a car for the first time, Indiana requires you to get a smog check. This requirement stays in place any time you purchase a new or used vehicle and register it in the state.
In addition, residents of Lake County and Porter County need to get an emissions test every two years to re-register their vehicle. These are the two closest counties to the Chicagoland area, so pollution is a bit higher—necessitating the smog check mandate.
