Do you have to wear a shirt while driving?

I feel more comfortable driving without a shirt on (I’m a man), but I don’t want to get a ticket. Do you have to wear a shirt when driving?

Hey, I like your style! You’re a real Jimmy Buffet kinda guy, I can tell. You’ll be pleased to know that there are no laws that require you to wear a shirt when driving, regardless of your gender expression. However, before you “drop the top,” it’s a good idea to brush up on your state’s indecent exposure laws—especially if you identify as a woman.
Things to keep in mind:
  • In most states, an indecent exposure charge requires displaying one’s genitals—nipples are not considered genitals.
  • In Utah, women who expose their nipples can face an indecent exposure charge. #patriarchy
  • Driving barefoot is also not illegal.
  • Even driving naked (unless you expose yourself to someone) may not be illegal—again, check your state’s indecent exposure laws.
