This may sound like a silly question, but do you check engine oil with the car on or off?

You should check engine oil with the car off. When the engine is on, it pushes oil through the system, so you wouldn’t get an accurate reading.
Follow these steps to check your oil:
  • Step 1: Park in a level place.
  • Step 2: Check your owner’s manual for engine temperature recommendations. Most experts recommend checking your oil when the engine is cold. However, some manufacturers recommend that the engine be warm—but not on.
  • Step 3: After opening the hood, find the dipstick and take a measurement. Wipe the dipstick clean with a rag.
  • Step 4: Replace the dipstick and take another measurement. If you can see the oil has reached the full line, then you have enough oil.
  • Step 5: Add oil if the oil is below the minimum mark.
