While you may be able to eke as many as a 1,000 miles out of a bad wheel bearing, ignoring the problem for too long can have serious safety consequences—including one of your wheels stopping without warning while you’re driving.
Driving on a bad wheel bearing can also damage the
wheel hub assembly
and CV joint, and even the car’s transmission. Over time, this can create irreparable damage to your vehicle and pose a huge safety risk to you and others around you.Some warning signs to watch out for with wheel bearing problems include:
- Loose or difficult handling
- Vibrating or wobbling steering wheel
- Uneven tire wear
Keep in mind: You don’t necessarily need to replace wheel bearings in pairs. There might be some advantages to doing so, but you can save money by replacing only the wheel bearing that has failed.
