Do U.S. rental car companies allow you to drive to Mexico?

I have a rental car right now and want to take a trip to Mexico. Can I drive across the border with it?

“In most cases, rental car companies will not allow you to travel to Mexico with a rental car, especially on a whim. There are set rules and regulations surrounding cross-border travel. While travel to Canada is typically approved, Mexico is usually off limits.
This is because the Mexican government doesn’t formally recognize U.S.
liability car insurance
. Taking the car to Mexico anyway may result in fines and other consequences, especially if you get in an accident, as you’re not covered.
If you want to travel to Mexico with your rental car, don’t attempt to cross the border until you speak with the rental company. You need their approval first.
