Several of our neighbors have installed rooftop solar and are raving about it. We’re considering getting solar panels, too—but do solar panels increase your home insurance?

As the cost to install solar panels continues to decrease, you’ll definitely see rooftop solar getting more popular. That said, whether solar panels increase your home insurance prices depends on the insurance company and your location.
Some companies will simply see that the panels have increased the value of your home and charge you more to protect that higher amount. Others may have discounts in place that reward customers who install eco-friendly systems with lower rates.
It’s important to note that most home insurance policies will cover solar panels, but coverage limits will depend on whether you install a rooftop system (which becomes part of your house’s structure) or a ground system (which is property adjacent to your home, like a shed or a pool).
