Do I still need an SR-22 if my license has been reinstated?

My license was suspended for a major violation but I recently got it reinstated. I’ve been carrying an SR-22 and now that I’m able to drive again, I’m wondering whether I still need it. It’s really running up my insurance costs…

Although your license is reinstated, you will still need to carry
SR-22 insurance
.
  • Every state has its own terms and conditions regarding SR-22 insurance
  • Most states require an SR-22 for three to five years after your license is suspended—even after reinstatement
  • Advise your insurer that you require an SR-22 when shopping for
    car insurance
     coverage—you will be considered a
    high-risk driver
, which can make it challenging to find a policy
  • The filing fee for an SR-22 is usually around $25
If your insurance lapses at any point while you are required to have an SR-22, your insurance company must report it to the DMV. The DMV will then suspend your license again until you’re insured.
