Do I need uninsured motorist coverage in Michigan?

I’m moving to Michigan for school, and I would like to update my car insurance policy before I move. I know I need basic liability insurance, but is uninsured motorist coverage required in Michigan?

Good luck with this next step! You do not need
uninsured motorist coverage
in
Michigan
, but it is recommended—insurance companies are required to offer it.
If you’re planning to hit the roads in Michigan, you must have both
residual bodily injury liability coverage
and
property damage liability coverage
in at least the following amounts:
  • Bodily injury per person: $20,000
  • Bodily injury per accident: $40,000
  • Property damage per accident: $10,000
You are also required to purchase personal injury protection (PIP) and property protection (PPI).
With more than 20% of drivers in Michigan being uninsured and a 1 in 5 chance of being involved in an accident with one, spending the extra money on uninsured motorist coverage can save you a significant amount down the road.
While additional coverage can be a considerable upfront cost, you can feel confident that you’re getting the most affordable rate when shopping with the
