Do I need my own insurance to use a company vehicle for personal use?

My employer lets me use the company car for personal use, so I use it often and keep it at my house. Do I need a separate policy or is the company’s liability insurance enough to cover me?

Whether or not you can benefit from your employer’s
liability coverage
while driving the company car depends on how the policy is worded.
Ask your employer to take a look at their agreement and check the following:
  • If you’re listed as a driver on the company
    car insurance
policy. Your name on the policy indicates that you’re specifically included in its benefits.
  • If the policy excludes personal use. Unsurprisingly, if your employer’s car insurance policy says you can’t use the company car for personal use, personal use isn’t covered.
Should you have any doubts at all, it’s best to check directly with your employer’s car insurance provider.
