Do I need an International Driving Permit in Switzerland?

I’m going on a European road trip this summer and I’m doing my research on what documents I’ll need to travel. Is my US license okay to drive in Switzerland, or will I need an International Driving Permit?

A European road trip sounds like an epic summer vacation! You typically don’t need an International Driving Permit in Switzerland as long as the vehicle you are driving is the same type of vehicle you’re licensed to drive. That means if you’re not licensed to drive
commercial vehicles
at home, you can’t drive commercial vehicles in Switzerland, either.
Swiss law requires foreign drivers to hold a license in French, German, Italian, or English. If the license is not in one of those languages, the driver must provide an International Driving Permit (IDP).
It’s a good idea to obtain an IDP if you’re road tripping around Europe so you won’t be found in violation of the law in any country you visit. To do this, you will need to:
  • Apply with the
    FIA/AIT
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Apply in your home country before traveling abroad
  • Be fully licensed—temporary licenses don’t count
  • Pay a $20 permit fee
  • Provide two photographs that follow the
same standards as a US passport
