Do I need an international driving license to drive in Italy?

I’ll be taking a road trip along the Amalfi Coast this summer. Do I need to get an international driving license to drive through Italy?

The Amalfi Coast is stunning! Yes, you need an international driving license in Italy to drive or to even rent a car. This is the law and failure to comply could result in some severe legal consequences.
If you get an international driving license, remember that it’s only valid for one year from the date of issue. You can apply for one at your local AAA office. Definitely work on getting your international driving permit before you leave the U.S., as it can be more complicated—and stressful!—to get one if you’re out of the country.
There are almost too many things to see and do in Italy! Make sure you check out these historical sites and tourist attractions:
  • The Verona Arena
  • Herculaneum at the base of Mount Vesuvius
  • The Island of Elba
  • Palazzo Ducale in Urbino
  • Trevi Fountain in Rome
