Do I need an international driving license for Portugal?

I’m going to Portugal for two weeks for vacation this year and plan to rent a car to take on a seaside road trip. Am I going to be able to drive, though? Should I get an international driving license first?

Portugal is a beautiful, historic country you’re sure to love after spending two weeks there. You’ll
need a license
to drive in most countries, and Portugal is no exception. For visits of six months or less, Americans do not need an international driving permit (IDP) for Portugal.
It may be a good idea to get an IDP when traveling internationally, especially if you plan to pop over to Spain. Plus, it’s worth having your identification in different languages, as your IDP would provide. To get your IDP, you will have to:
  • Apply through the
    FIA/AIT
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Apply at home before traveling internationally
  • Hold a standard, not temporary, license
  • Pay a $20 permit fee
  • Provide two photographs that follow the
same standards as a US passport
