Do I need an international driving license for Australia?

I’m going to visit my friend in Australia. I need to rent a car to drive up the Gold Coast. Do I need to get an international driving permit to drive in Australia? Or can I use my U.S. driver’s license?

A trip to the Gold Coast sounds like a lot of fun, and knowing the driving requirements before you head over can save you a lot of headaches (and money)!
Typically, you will not need an international driving license for Australia. Instead, you can use your U.S. driver’s license to drive up the Gold Coast if you’re a temporary visitor.
However, if your license isn’t in English, you’ll need to carry a formal translation or have an international driving permit (IDP).
That said, regulations related to driving with a foreign driver’s license vary from state to state in Australia, so it’s best to check the government website to confirm before you arrive.
On top of having a valid license, you’ll also need to have valid car insurance that meets the minimum international driving requirements. If your current car insurance policy doesn’t cover international travel,
