Do I need a driver’s license to drive a scooter with 50cc?

I’m looking to buy a scooter or a moped to get around but I don’t currently have a valid driver’s license. I’ve heard that there are fewer restrictions if you buy a scooter with an engine under 50cc. Do I need a driver’s license for that?

Scooters are definitely a great way to get from place to place! A scooter with a motor that is 50cc or smaller would be considered a moped. The rules for driving them differ from state to state, so you’ll need to check the regulations for your jurisdiction to find out whether you need a driving license for a scooter with 50cc.
  • 44 out of 50 states require drivers to hold a driver’s license before driving a moped
  • 12 states require a motorcycle license or a motorcycle endorsement on your regular license to drive a moped
  • 6 states do not require any driver’s license to drive a moped
Since rules vary, it’s important to check your state’s laws to confirm your next steps. But whether you need motorcycle endorsement or nothing at all, you’ll want the best
