Do I need a driver’s license to drive a mobility scooter?
I’m recovering from a stroke, which caused some paralysis and made it hard for me to walk without assistance. My doctor suggested that I get a mobility scooter but I can’t legally drive in the aftermath of my stroke. Do I need a driver’s license to drive one?

So sorry to hear about your stroke, but it’s great that you’re recovering mobility and trying to get back into the world. You do not need a driver’s license to drive a mobility scooter—nor do you need to register your scooter with the DMV so long as it travels no faster than 5 miles per hour.
Be aware that there may be limits on where you can drive your mobility scooter:
- As your scooter will likely be quite slow, you won’t be allowed to drive it on highways or major roadways
- Many states do not allow driving a mobility scooter on the road (as opposed to the sidewalk)—and for safety reasons, it’s not advisable anyway
- Since bike lanes are designed for bikes and not scooters, so do not drive your mobility scooter in a bike lane
