Do I need a driver’s license for an electric scooter?

I’m thinking of trading in my car for a scooter since I only have street parking where I live and it’s constantly hard to find a spot. Since my license is due to expire in six months, I also thought it could spare me a line at the DMV—but then I wondered if I’ll still need it. How exciting that you’re planning to buy a new scooter to get around town! They’re definitely great in areas where it’s hard to find parking. The size of scooter engines vary and different states have different laws. In general, though, you need a driver’s license for an electric scooter in most states.
Here are some things to remember:
  • Some states require motorcycle licenses or endorsements to drive an electric scooter
  • A few states do not require any kind of driver’s license to drive a small scooter
  • Most states have different rules for scooters with small engines (under 50cc) versus larger engines (greater than 50cc)
To be safe, you’ll want to check your state’s laws to learn the full situation before letting your license expire. And after you pick out the scooter of your dreams, you’ll want the best
