Do I need a driver’s license for an electric scooter?
I’m thinking of trading in my car for a scooter since I only have street parking where I live and it’s constantly hard to find a spot. Since my license is due to expire in six months, I also thought it could spare me a line at the DMV—but then I wondered if I’ll still need it. Do I need a driver’s license to drive an electric scooter?

The size of scooter engines vary and different states have different laws. In general, though, you need a driver’s license for an electric scooter in most states.
Here are some things to remember:
- Some states require motorcycle licenses or endorsements to drive an electric scooter
- A few states do not require any kind of driver’s license to drive a small scooter
- Most states have different rules for scooters with small engines (under 50cc) versus larger engines (greater than 50cc)
