Congratulations on buying your first home!
Yes, most insurance companies will check your credit, but they are interested in what’s called a credit-based insurance score rather than your raw credit score.
A credit-based insurance (or CBI) score incorporates your credit score to determine your risk of filing an insurance claim. This is different from the credit score lenders like your mortgage institution will check, which indicates your likelihood of paying back debt on time.
To calculate your CBI score, insurance companies will conduct a soft inquiry on your credit, which won’t lower your score but will stay on your credit record for a year or so.
The better your CBI score, the lower your premiums may be. Of course, your home insurance premium will also depend on your zip code, the size and value of your house, and other personal factors like employment type and marital status.
