Do high beams and low beams use the same bulb?

My high beams on my vehicle aren’t as bright as they used to be, and I’m guessing the bulb is going bad and needs to be replaced. But I don’t know if I need to buy just one bulb, or if I’ll need more than one. Do high beams and low beams use the same bulb? Do I need to replace both or just the high beams?

Well, it depends on what type of vehicle you drive. For example, in some cars, high beams and low beams are the same bulb, while others have two separate bulbs.
Here’s a better look at the two options:
  • Single filament bulbs: These have two settings, “on” or “off.” In vehicles that use single filament bulbs, each headlight would have two – one for the low beams, and one for high beams.
  • Dual filament bulbs: These bulbs have three settings, “low,” “high,” and “off.” With one bulb, you get low and high beams.
If your low beams are fine while your high beams have dimmed, chances are your vehicle uses separate bulbs. However, your car probably has dual filament bulbs if you notice high and low beams issues.
