Do electric cars have sound?
I am curious about switching to an electric car and I just took a test drive of a Tesla. It was so quiet! Is this normal do electric cars have sound?

) are typically very quiet because of their difference in design from a traditional car. The difference in sound between the two different designs has to do with the motor’s energy source. In a traditional gas-powered car, the internal combustion engine is just as the name sounds—it’s loud.
Think about standing at a stoplight or even listening to a car running outside the chugging and sputtering noises is from the pistons firing inside the engine. Even a brand new gas-powered luxury car makes a considerable amount of noise due to the design of the engine and motor.

electric cars are quiet
. The power source is electric so instead of pistons firing, electrons moving from the battery to the motor are silent. When driving an electric car the only sound is a humming of the motor and the wind against the windows. It’s similar to the whirring of a toy car but on a much larger scale. Multiple articles point out that if all the cars on the road were electric, the sound of traffic would be significantly reduced especially in metropolitan areas. This would greatly reduce noise pollution but there is a potential danger in near-silent cars. For those who are visually impaired, and for young children trained to both look and listen for cars, safety may become a larger issue.
For those who miss the rev of the traditional engine, some electric cars are researching potential ways to modify the sound of the motor and horn. In 2020, Tesla Boombox had an update so drivers can play sounds outside of the car.
