This is an interesting question, and one we hear a lot. Technically, electric cars have just one gear.
Electric cars don’t have engines. They have electric motors, which are able to produce a consistent amount of power and torque at a very wide range of speeds.
This electrical power is delivered instantly, without the need to rev or cycle through gears.
As a result, EVs don’t need multi-speed gears in the same way as their fuel-burning counterparts.
A couple of high-end EVs, including the Porsche Taycan, have two gears, but the vast majority of electric cars get by with single-speed transmission.
