Do driving warnings go on your record?

Up until today, my driving record has been spotless. But I was pulled over and given a warning about my license plate having mud on it. Do warnings go on your driving record?

I get why you’d want to know since your
driving record
has been good up to this point! Driving warnings don’t go on your record, per se.
How they are handled depends on the way in which the warning was given:
  • Verbal warnings: If a police officer gives you a verbal warning only, it will not appear on your record. An officer may note the exchange, but the warning will likely go no further than their notepad.
  • Written warnings: Written warnings are not the same as a ticket. However, they may be added to your file by the police officer. Don’t fret, though—it will not have an impact on your driving record. Similarly, your car insurance company may see the warning on your file, but the warning will not affect your insurance rates.
