Do car rental companies check your driving record?

I need to rent a car while on vacation next week. I’m a little worried about getting rejected because of my driving record. Do companies check your driving record when you rent a car?

Car rental companies are not required to check your driving record before you rent a vehicle. Still, most do it as a proactive way to avoid renting to risky drivers.
Rental car companies usually have a do not rent list, but this is mainly reserved for customers who have had an accident or incident when previously renting a car. Sometimes, though, a bad driving record can put you on the list.
When renting a car, it typically goes like this:
  • You’ll be required to give the company your driver’s license
  • They will verify your ID and check that your license is in good standing
  • They will then run a check on your driving record
The good news is that most rental car companies will still do business with someone with a bad driving record. However, be aware that they might charge an additional fee.
