Good question! While China is currently the leading buying and manufacturer of electric vehicles, no the electric car was first invented in North America in the late 19th century.
Due to all the innovation at the time, the exact person is hard to pin down, but here are two notable names. In 1887, chemist William Morrison built a prototype of an electric-powered carriage which then went on the become America’s first, multi-passenger, electric vehicle.
Just several years later in 1893, Canadian lawyer Frederick Fetherstonhaugh teamed up with an engineer and a carriage maker to fashion one. He spent his next 15 years commuting in his new vehicle which was able to be recharged on the streetcar grid.
From then on the development of the electric vehicle continued to the present day where we have Teslas with self-driving features. While China did not invent the electric car, there is no telling what new innovations Chinese car manufacturers may come up with in years to come.
