Did Steve McQueen do the driving in Bullitt?

My family and I are having a little debate about Steve McQueen. I say he did all of his own driving—including the driving in that beautiful ‘68 Mustang from Bullitt. My family says it was done by a stunt double. So, who’s right?

There’s nothing wrong with some friendly family competition. We’d love to settle it for you but, in this case, you’re all partially right!
Steve McQueen didn’t do all of the driving in Bullitt’s legendary chase scene. Though he was credited as the driver, he actually shared the driving honors with Hollywood stuntman Bud Ekins.
That said, McQueen did lots of the driving—and even filmed the scene with his windows down to prove it! His commitment to driving in one of Hollywood’s most famous chase scenes paid off, too. In 2020, the 1968 Ford Mustang GT that McQueen drove during the scene sold for a record-breaking $3.4 million at auction, smashing the auction house’s previous sales record.
