Could a rear end collision damage the transmission?

I was recently rear-ended. The car was fixed, but now I’m hearing a weird noise when I shift gears. Could a rear end collision damage the transmission?

So sorry to hear about your accident! Yes, it’s possible that a rear-end collision could damage the transmission—especially in
rear-wheel-drive
and all-wheel-drive vehicles.
If your vehicle has transmission components located in the rear of the vehicle, then it’s possible for a rear-end collision to damage the transmission. In front-wheel-drive vehicles, this is less likely since the main transmission is located in the front of the vehicle under the hood.
Here are some signs that your transmission could have a problem:
  • Transmission slips and you struggle with shifting
  • Loud grinding noise when changing gears
If you have any difficulty switching gears, you should immediately bring your vehicle to a repair shop for a transmission assessment. A cracked or damaged transmission will eventually lead to serious problems. Don’t delay!
Car insurance
can help cover these costs if the damage was caused by the original accident. Make sure to document everything carefully and reach out to your claims adjuster.
