You’re on the right track. While owning an electric car is cost-effective, you should not work on your electric car at home unless you have the necessary skills.
When you own an
electric vehicle
, you don’t have to pay for many of the services associated with owning a gas-fueled car, like oil changes. You may only end up spending a third of what the average car owners pay for servicing their vehicle. Still, owning an electric vehicle is not entirely maintenance-free. Manufacturers suggest that owners take their electric cars to get a series of checks and services as per your vehicle’s warranty. In fact, you risk losing your warranty if you don’t follow the recommended maintenance schedule. You can perform some services, but a trained mechanic should perform the more technical services.

- Check tires of wear and tear; adjust pressure monthly
- Check and refill windshield washer fluid monthly
Technician services:
- Flush salt and corrosive materials from the underbody twice a year
- Replace wiper blades every 15,000 miles
- Replace air filters every 36,000 miles
- Replace lift support gas struts every 75,000 mile
- Drain and fill vehicle coolants and brake fluid every five years
