Can you use a reverse camera in a driving test?

I’ve been driving my parents’ car to get ready for my driving test. It’s a newer car, so it has a backup camera. I’ve grown to count on it to avoid hitting objects when I back up. Can I use a backup camera for a driver’s test?

Backup cameras certainly make driving easier! You can technically use a reverse camera in a driving test, as most come on automatically. However, you can’t use a backup camera as your primary line of sight. You must still use the old-school approach of checking your mirrors and looking out the back window while you’re reversing.
To correctly reverse and pass the backing-up portion of your driving test, follow these steps:
  1. Put your left hand on top of the steering wheel and your right hand on the back of the passenger’s seat.
  2. Keep your foot on the brake.
  3. Scan 360 degrees to make sure no cars or objects are behind you or oncoming. Use your side mirrors and rearview mirror to help you.
  4. Check your blind spots.
  5. Put the car into reverse and slowly release the brake.
  6. As you release the brake, the car should start to move backward. If you need more power, gently press the accelerator.
  7. If you need to reverse more than one car length, brake to a stop and make sure to do a 360-degree scan again.
Hopefully, you pass your driving test! But once you get your license, your work isn’t done. You still need to get the proper
car insurance
to legally get behind the wheel. While car insurance for new drivers is rather expensive, don’t feel that you’re destined to pay top dollar.
