If you’re hittin’ the road for a cross-country tour, the good news is that, yes—you can run your generator while driving your RV, so long as it is a built-in generator. Never run a portable generator inside your RV, because it can release deadly carbon monoxide.
Here are some basics about running a built-in generator while driving:
  • Running non-driving capabilities: With a built-in generator in a fixed position, it is designed to be running while you drive. The built-in generator can power the RV’s air conditioning, keep the fridge running, charge your laptop, etc.
  • Auto shut-off: Built-in generators are powered by the RV’s fuel tank—once your fuel level drops below ¼ of a tank, the generator will automatically shut off.
  • Rain or shine: While driving, feel free to use your built-in generator rain or shine—it is safe to use no matter the weather.
Running a portable generator while driving is a completely different story—it produces carbon monoxide, which can be deadly. In addition, a portable generator can slide around when you’re driving, which can damage your RV or even cause injuries. It would also need to be protected from moisture. To be safe, never run a portable generator inside your RV.
