I’m taking my driving test soon and the car I’ll be using has a backup camera. Am I allowed to use the camera on the test?

We are so spoiled, aren’t we? Even with most new cars rolling off the line with driver-assist technology built in, it depends on your state—be sure to check your local laws before assuming you can use your car’s backup camera on a driving test.
  • Check your state: Before you head over to the DMV to take your test, take a few minutes to see if using driver-assist technology on a driving test is allowed in your state.
  • A state where you can: In Texas, you are allowed to use your car’s backup camera on a driving test. Any technology that comes standard with your car is fair game.
  • A state where you can’t: In Massachusetts, not only are you not allowed to use your car’s backup camera on a driving test. You cannot even use a car equipped with one, either! As most new cars have some kind of driver-assist technology built in, you’ll need to find an older car to take a driving test in the Bay State.
  • Cover it up: Some states allow you to use a car with a backup camera if it is either ignored or covered up while you are taking your driver’s test—but again, check your local laws to be sure
  • Don’t try to pull a fast: Think you can sneak one by your examiner and let your car’s advanced backup camera and sensor system parallel park for you? We probably don’t need to explain to you why that won’t fly.
It all depends on where you’ll be taking your driving test to properly answer if you can use a backup camera or not. Practice your driving skills and keep your wits about you, and you’ll pass that driving test with flying colors—driver-assist technology or not! And of course, make sure you have a solid
