Can you travel with a newborn by car?

My wife and I want to take a road trip soon to visit family and introduce them to our newborn, but we’re nervous. Can you travel by car with a newborn?

First of all, congratulations! I’m sure your family will be overjoyed to meet their new relative. The good news is that yes, you can travel with a newborn by car.
In general, there’s no real reason to avoid traveling by car with a newborn, but you should:
  • Make sure your newborn is comfortable in the car by taking some shorter practice trips before the road trip.
  • Ensure you have a safe and properly installed car seat.
  • Plan to stop often for diaper changes, feedings, etc.
  • Bring anything you think you might need, and more, such as diapers, food, toys, cleaning supplies, extra clothes, medicines, etc.
  • Try to plan travel times around the newborn’s sleep schedule.
  • Keep a simple schedule that includes time for rest and emergencies.
Additionally, you should review your
car insurance
policy before leaving to ensure you and your family and well protected and have all the coverages you may need, like
towing and labor coverage
.
