Can you travel in an Uber without a car seat?

I’m visiting New York City next week and will be bringing my son, who is three years old. Do I need to bring a car seat for him to ride in an Uber with me?

The Big Apple! I love NYC. While car seat laws vary by state, Uber and Lyft typically require children of car seat age to ride in a car seat. Car seat requirements vary according to local law, so always make sure to check your destination’s laws beforehand.
Here’s some helpful information on car seat laws in NYC and other cities:
  • In most cities, Uber and Lyft require children to ride in car seats if under a certain age— and passengers must provide their own car seats.
  • In some cities—including NYC—Uber will provide a car seat upon request for a $10 surcharge
  • In some locations, Uber may fall under taxi cabs laws, which do not require children to ride in car seats
  • You are always permitted to bring a car seat into an Uber and the driver is required to allow you time to install it
When you get back from NYC, you might take some time to consider whether you’re spending too much on
