Can you switch to 4 wheel drive while driving?

I love my new car and really want to use 4 wheel drive more often. I don’t want to harm my car, so I was wondering if you can switch to 4 wheel drive while driving?

That’s a great question, especially if you want to drive safely and keep your car in great condition. It is possible to switch to 4 wheel drive while you’re driving if you have a newer vehicle.
You should only do this if you are driving:
  • On a wet road
  • On an icy road
  • In the mud
  • Through sand
  • On similarly soft or unstable surfaces
If you have an older 4WD vehicle, you can only shift to 4H while you’re stopped.
