Can you sedate a dog for car travel?

I’ve never taken a long car ride with my dog. I’m planning to take her across the country and I’m a little nervous. I want her to be comfortable. Is it possible to sedate a dog for car travel?

Traveling with a dog can be stressful, but it can also be amazing. Is there anything better than having your canine companion at your side on a road trip?
If you are concerned about your dog’s welfare during the trip, you can sedate her. Sedatives can help anxious dogs with car travel. You’ll need to contact your vet before the trip to get an appropriate dosage for her.
Here are three tips for safe sedation of a dog for car travel:
  • Secure the dog well. Sedatives can make your dog drowsy and uncoordinated, meaning it is extra important to secure her safely in her crate or car seat.
  • Offer plenty of water. Sedatives can be dehydrating. Provide lots of water (and potty breaks).
  • Monitor the dog afterward. It can take some time for the medication to wear off. However, persistent lethargy or ill health is not normal. Keep a close eye on your pup once you arrive at your destination.
