Can you return a car in Texas?

I’m thinking of buying my partner a new car for our anniversary, but I’m afraid of getting the wrong one. Can I return a car I don’t like if I live in Texas?

Unfortunately, you cannot return a car in Texas just because you don’t like it—however, there are a few exceptions to Texas’s no-return policy for cars:
  • You purchased a
used car that turns out to be a lemon
or requires repeated repairs beyond the warranty.
  • There is a loophole in the agreement or contract that nullifies the sale.
  • Some dealerships may provide a 24-hour grace period for returns, but it’s rare.
  • You may have three days to force a refund if you bought the car somewhere besides the dealer’s place of business.
What to do: Check the
lemon laws in Texas
if you think you’ve been sold a faulty model. In any other case listed above, your first step should be to negotiate with the manager at your dealership or seek legal aid if you’re not comfortable.
Keep in mind: You can always
lease a car
if you’re worried about buyer’s remorse. While you’ll still have to live with it for a few years, you may have some solace in knowing that there’s an expiration date on its time in your garage!
