Can you report reckless driving to the police?

I was driving home last night when a truck in front of me started driving erratically. I kept my distance to be safe before they turned off the road, but for future reference—can you call the police if someone is driving dangerously?

How scary! Reckless driving can be incredibly dangerous and even deadly. In situations like that, you can report reckless driving to the police. Here are a few pointers to do so:
  1. Assess the risk. Are they swerving between lanes? Street racing? Blowing through traffic signals? Only call the police if you think they pose a risk to other drivers.
  2. Note the vehicle’s details. Try to memorize the car’s details, like make, model, and license plate, taking note of any distinctive markers like bumper stickers or modifications. If you have a passenger, this is a good job for them to do.
  3. Call the police. Have your passenger call the police while you’re driving, or pull over your car to make the call. If you believe lives could be at risk, call 911 and give them a detailed explanation of the situation. If it’s less dangerous, call the local non-emergency police line.
To avoid putting yourself in unnecessary danger, it’s important to never follow the car. If you’ve given the information to the police, they’ll take it from there.
