Can you rent a car to travel out of state?

I drive an older Ford F-150 that gets horrible gas mileage. I’m planning a cross-country camping trip this summer and feel it might be cheaper to just rent a vehicle that is more efficient. Can I travel out of state with a rental car?

We hope you have an amazing trip! Yes, you can travel out of state with a rental car as long as you’re using a national brand like
Enterprise
or
Hertz
.
This rule is simply predicated on your ability to return the vehicle. These car rental companies are located across the country, so the return location can be flexible–although you may experience additional fees for one-way trips.
The rules can differ if you’re renting from a regional car rental company. They may restrict you from crossing state lines or they might only rent vehicles for roundtrips.
Many
car insurance
companies offer additional coverage on rental vehicles. If you’re looking for this coverage, the
Jerry
app is the easiest and most effective way to find a car insurance policy that is customized for you.
