Can you lose your license for a speeding ticket?
I just got a speeding ticket and I’m freaking out a little bit. I was only going eight or nine over the limit, but it’s my third ticket this year and I’m worried about losing my license. Could I lose my license for speeding?

I’m sorry to hear that you got a ticket! Thankfully, you probably will not lose your license for speeding—especially if your other tickets were only a few miles per hour over the limit.
The two main factors that impact license suspension are the number of violations you have and the severity of the violation. Though the rules vary based on state, we’ll break down what each one could mean for you.
- Number of violations: Most states allow at least three driving violations before they suspend your license. So, two or three minor speeding violations shouldn’t cost you your license.
- Severity of violations: Here’s where things get a little more complicated. Most states use a point system, and you’ll lose your license if you get too many points in a short period. Minor speeding violations usually add only a point or two, but serious offenses like reckless driving could add six or more points to a driver’s record.
To sum up, it’s technically possible to lose your license for speeding, but it’s unlikely if you only have a few minor violations.
Even though it won’t cost you your license, a speeding ticket can cause a big spike in your insurance rates.
