Can you get your license suspended for speeding?

A few hours ago, I got pulled over for speeding. I was only going a few miles per hour over the limit, but it’s my second speeding ticket this month, so I’m a little worried about losing my license. Could they suspend my license for a speeding ticket?

We’re sorry to hear that you got pulled over—getting a ticket is never fun. Fortunately, it’s very unlikely that you’ll lose your license for speeding, especially if it was only a few mph over the limit!
Most states have a point system that determines when your license gets suspended. If you accumulate too many points in a short time period (usually 12-18 months), your license will be suspended. The number of points a violation adds to your driving record depends on the severity of the violation.
For example, going five or six mph over the limit normally costs one or two points. If you’re going 20 mph over, though, that could set you back a hefty number of points. Serious violations, like reckless driving, can get your license suspended quickly.
Even in states that don’t have a point system, you can usually get three or more tickets before facing a license suspension. So, since you were only going a few mph over, and you only have two speeding tickets, you should have nothing to worry about!
Unfortunately, a speeding ticket (even a minor one!) can cause your insurance rates to spike. If you want to fight to keep those monthly payments down,
