Can you get a ticket for wearing headphones while driving?

The stereo on my car crackles whenever I listen to music at even moderate volumes. As a result, I wear my headphones while I’m driving. My friend told me that it’s illegal, but I’m not certain. Can I get a ticket for wearing headphones while driving?

Driving with headphones may be allowed in your state, but it’s never a good idea because it can lead to
distracted driving
. From a legal standpoint, however, you can wear headphones in almost all states. The only places where you can get a ticket for wearing headphones while driving are:
  • Alaska
  • California
  • Louisiana
  • Maryland
  • Minnesota
  • Ohio
  • Rhode Island
  • Virginia
  • Washington
Outside of these states, you can wear headphones, but some states only allow you to wear one headphone while driving. Check with your local DMV or police department to learn the law in your area.
