Can you flat tow a CVT transmission?
My car has a CVT transmission—can I safely flat tow it behind a U-Haul truck?

Flat-towing your car behind a U-Haul truck is a great way to transport your vehicle during a move. Unfortunately, vehicles with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) cannot be flat towed with all four wheels on the ground because it would damage the transmission.
You have two options when it comes to towing your CVT vehicle:
- You can add devices like driveshaft decouplers and transmission lubrication pumps to some automatic transmission vehicles so that they can be flat towed safely. But they can be expensive and complicated to install and maintain—and used incorrectly, you could damage the engine or drivetrain components while towing the vehicle. This could void your warranty.
- Tow your vehicle using a dolly or trailer. A dolly lifts two of the car’s wheels off the ground while a trailer will lift all four.
You should consult your owner’s manual for directions on how to safely tow your vehicle. There, you’ll find your manufacturer’s towing recommendations and any restrictions, such as maximum speed limits for towing.
