Can you drive a Prius without a catalytic converter?

Someone stole the catalytic converter right out of my Prius! I’m so upset. I can’t afford to replace it right now. Is it possible to drive without a catalytic converter?

Oh, no! I’m so sorry to hear that. Thieves are the worst. You can drive a Prius without a catalytic converter; however, it’s not a great long-term solution. Your Prius will not function as well and will fail an emissions test.
Here’s what to do after having a catalytic converter stolen:
  1. Contact the police and file a police report.
  2. Contact your insurance company—depending on the policy you have, your car insurance may cover some or all of the costs of replacing your catalytic converter.
  3. Bring your car to a repair shop—you can drive the car there!
If you don’t replace your catalytic converter, you can expect:
  • Loud engine noises
  • Rough driving and jerky acceleration
  • Failed emissions tests
I hope this is helpful. I’m so sorry you were the victim of theft, but I hope you can get some help in paying for your new catalytic converter!
