Can you clean a fuel tank without removing it?

I’ve been having trouble with my vehicle lately, namely poor acceleration and inaccurate gas gauge readings. I read online that it might be from dirt or other contaminants in the fuel tank. How can I clean my fuel tank without having to remove it?

Follow these steps to clean your fuel tank without removing it:
  • Step 1: Disconnect all fuel lines.
  • Step 2: Fully drain the fuel tank into a designated gas can or container.
  • Step 3: Degrease the fuel tank by adding a special degreaser. Regular dish soap and hot water will also work. Let this sit for 24 hours.
  • Step 4: Use a pressure washer to rinse out the tank.
  • Step 5: Apply a chemical cleaning solution to the tank and let sit for several hours.
  • Step 6: Pressure wash the tank again to remove any remaining rust or dirt.
  • Step 7: Let your gas tank dry completely—usually 24 to 48 hours—before adding fuel.
Keep in mind: Cleaning your fuel tank requires multiple day’s time, so be sure to plan ahead before beginning the process.
