Can you change your car keys to an electric key fob?

I recently drove a rental car with an electric key fob and push-to-start keyless ignition and I found it so much more convenient than the traditional turnkey start on my current car. Would I be able to upgrade my car to have electric keys?

Having electronically-controlled
keys
or a smart key system has become the standard among automakers for good reason—they’re convenient, easy to use, prevent your car from getting stolen, and the sensors on them help eliminate the frustration of things like
getting locked out
of your car. You don’t even have to take the key out of your pocket or purse to do things like unlock the doors or start the engine.
You absolutely can upgrade your old manual key or dated key fob into a smart key, you just need to hire a locksmith to do it, as they require special programming.
The one drawback to this new tech is that replacing it can be expensive. If you happen you lose your new smart key fob, your
car insurance
might cover some of the
replacement costs
