Can you change from 2WD to 4WD while driving?

I just moved to a new area that gets a lot of snow and I finally get to use the 4WD mode on my SUV. I just want to make sure I’m using it properly. Can I switch from 2WD to 4WD while moving, or do I need to choose one before I drive?

Most four-wheel drive vehicles allow you to switch from 2WD to 4WD while the car is in motion, but only under certain circumstances.
Take the following precautions when switching from 2WD to 4WD while moving:
  • Reduce to a slow speed, never exceeding 60 mph.
  • Make the switch while driving in a straight line.
  • Only switch from 2WD to high-range 4WD, never low-range 4WD.
Keep in mind: Never switch from high-range 4WD to low-range 4WD while your car is moving. While switching from 2WD to 4WD while moving isn’t likely to hurt your car, switching between the two 4WD modes while moving can significantly damage your gearbox and differential.
