Can the NYS electric car incentive be used in another state?
I live in New Jersey, but I’m shopping for a car in the New York area because I’m hoping to receive their electric car incentive. If I buy an EV in New York but I’m from out of state, will I still qualify?

Clever thinking, but unfortunately, out-of-staters don’t qualify for NYS’s electric car incentive. Residents of New York are the only people who can receive this EV credit. Some have even hoped that having dual residency or property in NYS would help them qualify, but even that just won’t cut it. So even if you can’t qualify yourself, it’s helpful to know what New York’s EV credit is, especially since other states like New Jersey may follow suit.
NYS is hoping to cut down on emissions, so they’re offering up to $2,000 in cashback to car buyers who purchase an EV. Even those who are leasing an electric car are eligible. This creates a great opportunity to reduce your
carbon footprint
, as well as get some cashback in your pocket after buying a vehicle. There are still some steps to follow though; car owners or lessees will need to fill out a W-9 for the tax year in which they purchased the vehicles. Hybrid and
gas vehicles
