Can my employer copy my driving license?

I just started at a new job and when I was filling out the paperwork, my boss asked for my driver’s license so that he could make a copy of it. Is he allowed to do that? I’ve never had someone make a copy of my ID before and it made me a little nervous.

Congrats on your new job! Yes, your employer is allowed to make a copy of your
driving license
for their records. They do this to properly document your identifying paperwork for your I-9 form and to verify details like your date of birth.
If using your driving license makes you uncomfortable, there are other forms of ID that you can use instead, such as:
  • A passport
  • A military card with a photo
  • A voter registration card
  • Some school IDs with photos
  • A permanent resident card
While you’re learning more about required I-9 documents, why not learn about your insurance options too? The
Jerry
app compares rates from 50+ top insurance providers to find you the coverage you need in a matter of minutes. Just download the app, complete the 45-second sign-up, and let Jerry do the rest!
I hope that you feel better about providing ID now that you know you have other options available. Enjoy the new job!
